"GSEC gets to the noble purpose of business."
Dean James Jiambalvo, GSEC Awards Banquet, 2008

GSEC unites the business, non-profit and academic sectors in learning about and supporting innovative and financially feasible solutions to global poverty.

The Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition (GSEC) invites students from around the world—and across fields of study—to find creative, unorthodox solutions to problems of poverty in the developing world.  As a leading-edge initiative at the University of Washington, GSEC seeks to engage creative minds around the world and across disciplines to encourage bolder and less conventional business solutions to global poverty.

Each year the Global Business Center (GBC) invites a select group of teams to GSEC Week at the University of Washington Michael G. Foster School of Business.  Interdisciplinary teams present their business ideas to judges and compete for prize money, including two prizes for global health plans.

GSEC plans demonstrate the social and financial returns on investment and can focus on any subject area, such as energy, environment, health, or technology. Plans are judged on the impact on the quality of life in the developing world, financial sustainability, and implementation feasibility.  Learn more about the 2009 competition.

GBC invites individuals from the community participate in GSEC as a mentor, judge, or sponsor. Download a GSEC Participation Opportunities flyer.

GSEC is sponsored and facilitated by the Global Business Center at the UW Foster School, with the support of Microsoft (Grand Prize sponsor) and the UW Department of Global Health (global health prizes sponsor). View the complete list of complete list of GSEC 2009 sponsors.
