GSEC Team Updates

  • ProGreen: "In brief, we are setting up a pilot unit which will be manufacturing biodegradable cups and plates, by September. The unit is being set up in a village called Samudram, Salem District, South India. We have partnered with a local villager called Mr. Velmurugan. The machines are being currently funded by ProGreen. Bases on the progress of this pilot project, we hope to expand and create the full-fledged cooperative as earlier planned. We keep looking for new ideas to expand the ProGreen model. As a next step we developed a ProGreen IT Enabled Services Cooperative. This plan recently won the 1st Price at Imagine Cup, held by Microsoft." Updated by Santhosh R. ProGreen Team, August 22, 2005

  • W.A.T.E.R.: " We have offered our services to a French Organization based in the north of Cameroon and to four rural municipalities. Currently technical and financial evaluations are made.  In addition we are continuing the development of our software and the enrichment of our data base.  We have also initiated contacts with the private sector for the financing of WATER. Also, we are actually working with a team  set up by the national authorities in collaboration with the Polytechnic  Foundation  for the search for financements to the WATER project." Updated by Foutse Khomh. W.A.T.E.R. Team, September 6, 2005

  • Marketplace Africa: " Marketplace Africa just went live today (9/7/05), meaning that the payment for the first order of African artisan wares was wired to Ghana, and the subsequent shipment of items was placed into the hands of Overstock.com's freight forwarders.  The business is now launched, and has already positively impacted the lives of several artisans.  We have contacted over two thousand artisans in Ghana and have provided samples to Overstock.com.  Now we begin the ramp-up phase.  The Marketplace Africa business plan was entered into several other competitions, including Berkeley, University of Utah, and Brigham Young University, where we were semi-finalists, finalists, and won first place (social category), respectively." Updated by Sam Bernards, Marketplace Africa team, September 7, 2005
