Accommodations for Disabilities
Admission to the MPAcc - Taxation Program is for fall
quarter only. Each fall quarter, the Michael G. Foster School of Business registers
approximately 45 new students in the program. The Foster School selects
men and women who we believe have the highest potential for
achievement in the accounting profession.
We select prospective students on the basis of their academic
achievements, their ability to communicate effectively, and
their record of personal accomplishments. Prospective students
must have well-developed language and reasoning skills. During
our evaluation process, we examine applicants to determine
their facility in reading, writing, and speaking English,
and the ability to reason analytically, logically, and creatively.
Admission is based on a number of criteria including:
Satisfactory completion of prerequisite courses (see Prerequisites -
applicants must have completed at least 4 of the accounting
concentration courses listed under Prerequisites).
- Scores from the GMAT exam
- International TOEFL scores
- Well written essays
- Work experience
- Volunteer and student activities
Selection criteria
We evaluate each applicant in terms of:
- Past academic performance. We
review each prospective student's undergraduate history,
taking note of the difficulty of the curriculum and the
scholastic quality of the school attended. We also consider
the applicant's post baccalaureate academic experience.
- General intellectual ability. We
evaluate each individual's performance on the Graduate
Management Admission Test (GMAT), which provides a measure
of the applicant's general verbal and quantitative abilities.
These attributes, which develop over a long period of time,
are related to success in graduate management curricula.
- Managerial and leadership potential. We assess
each prospective student's level of managerial responsibility
by examining his or her accomplishments in school, community
activities and work experience.
- Ability to communicate clearly, succinctly,
and persuasively. The required essays demonstrate
each applicant's level of writing competence, as well
as his or her ability to think through issues.
In selecting the entering class, the Foster School also strives
to create an environment that fosters a rich and satisfying
learning experience and is representative of society as a
whole. We believe that a diverse student body helps create
such an environment.
Application due dates for classes beginning in Fall 2008
| International applicants |
| November 1, 2007 |
Final Deadline |
| Domestic applicants (U. S. citizens, permanent residents) |
| February 15, 2008 |
Official Deadline |
Late domestic applications received after the published
deadlines will be processed on a space available basis. We
are unable to process international applications after the
deadline dates. Applicants must submit their MPAcc packets
to the MPAcc Program, Michael G. Foster School of Business, University of Washington,
Mackenzie Hall, Box 353200, Seattle, WA 98195-3200.
Financial Aid
Students in need of financial assistance may receive aid
from the University of Washington, the Foster School, or
both. Aid is available in the form of non-state sponsored
aid: loans, fellowships and scholarships are available for
domestic students. Very limited funding is available for
international students. Domestic financial aid candidates
must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) form, which can be obtained from the UW Office
of Student Financial Aid or most other college
aid offices. The FAFSA is available from the Office of Student
Financial Aid beginning in December or early January each
year. Applicants can request a complete financial aid packet,
which includes all necessary forms and instructions for UW
applicants, by writing to:
Financial Aid Office
105 Schmitz Hall, Box 355880
Seattle, WA 98195-5880
or by calling (206) 543-6101
To be considered eligible for financial aid, the prospective
student must mail the FAFSA form directly to the Iowa City,
Iowa office before February 28, for the coming fall.
The Foster School grants financial aid primarily on the
basis of need for assistance, as determined from information
on the FAFSA application. The School notifies entering students
of financial awards in late May; the University sends notice
of awards during the summer. Applicants who have not submitted
all necessary financial aid documents or who file their applications
after the February 28 deadline may not receive notification
of an award before the MPAcc Program's enrollment service
fee is due on June 1.
The MPAcc Application Process
Each prospective student is responsible for assembling and
submitting, in one envelope, the MPAcc – Tax application
package. Please use the following list to prepare your package.
We cannot process incomplete applications. The only items
in the applicant's packet that will be sent to the school
from a separate source are the Graduate Management Admission
Test (GMAT) score and if required, the TOEFL score.
You may apply on-line through the UW Graduate Admissions
Office by following the instructions at their Web site, Graduate
School Application
You must
then submit pages 2-4 of the MPAcc application, along with
your supporting documents directly to the MPAcc Program Office.
- Application form. Fill out
the form completely and sign it. Be sure to include the
separate pages on which you've written your essays.
- Application fee. The application fee is $50 US, subject to change without notice. The fee is paid online using MasterCard or Visa credit or debit cards or electronic personal check (for those with U.S. bank accounts).
- Essays. Please complete both
essay questions. Double space your responses and do not
use compressed type.
1. Assume that you have an opportunity to meet with
the MPAcc admissions committee. The committee has asked
you to describe yourself, elaborating on the reasons
why you should be admitted to the program. This is
your chance to tell them about the things that are
important to you, to give them information or insight
that will convince them to admit you. Specifically
address your career goals in professional accounting
and the relevance of the MPAcc degree. Limit to 500
words.
2. Considering the events of the last five years,
select an issue or problem on which your national government
has taken a major policy position or initiated major
action. Propose an alternative position or solution
to the issue or problem and support your viewpoint
with specific information. Limit to 750 words.
- Official transcripts. Include
two official transcripts from each postsecondary school
you have attended. These transcripts must be sealed in
an envelope with the school's registrar's signature across
the seal. Do not open these envelopes. If you attended
the University of Washington as an undergraduate or post
baccalaureate student, you must still request and submit
the two transcripts.
- GMAT scores. Each applicant
must take the GMAT. We advise applicants to take the examination
early. Please submit a photocopy of the test score you
receive at the test center. There is a five-year limit
on GMAT scores. When you take the test, inform the Educational
Testing Service (ETS) that it must forward your scores
to the University of Washington. The School's code number
is 459-75-41. We will hold your scores on file for one year.
Recommendation Forms. Download
this form and list three people who are able
to provide detailed information about your academic performance,
employment responsibilities and accomplishments, activities,
personality or character.
- TOEFL scores. The demands
of the MPAcc Program require that all students have a thorough
understanding of the English language. The Test of English
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is mandatory for all permanent
residents, immigrants and international applicants who
do not hold a bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited
English-speaking institution of a country where the official
language is English. The TOEFL score is evaluated along
with the verbal portion of the GMAT to determine how well
a candidate is prepared to attend classes conducted in
English.
International applicants must take the TOEFL
by October 1st. TOEFL scores are useful for two years, and
the scores must be sent directly to the University of Washington. Our
school code is 4854. For more information, or to request
that your scores be sent to us, please contact TOEFL/TSE Services,
PO Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151, or call (609) 951-1100.
Admission packets are due November 1st.

in August for the 3-quarter program beginning with the following
autumn quarter.
